It all started nine weeks ago; actually if I were to be honest it started long before that, I’ve wanted to do this for a while now, but nine weeks ago I actually began. I completed my registration form, paid my fee and was ready to start the Genesis 5k Training Program. I originally hoped to have some women from the sober house that I work with join me in this but that didn’t happen but I was determined to do this program. I spoke with Matt, the coach, prior to starting and he told me this program isn’t just about running it’s a program of transformation. He’s right, people do this program for all different reasons. My most obvious ones were of course to go the distance and finish a 5k. There were some that were more personal that I never mentioned and didn’t necessarily need to be; but the person who started this program nine weeks ago was not the person who finished it.
Matt was right, there is a transformation, a transformation of mind, body, and spirit, whether people are aware of it or not. Some, myself included, may not even realize the full extent of the transformation that has occurred, it will manifest itself in different areas of our lives. Even as I write this I am full of emotion and I have no idea where that is coming from (didn’t see that coming). Matt and his team of coaches are were great support and very encouraging, for them this isn’t just about running, it’s their ministry; they are a good group of people to work with.
I’m so glad I did this program. I don’t think I would have completed the 5k without it. The accountability of a check in each week, the group support was extremely beneficial. That’s why programs like AA/NA and Weight Watchers work, having support makes the journey a little bit easier. This was a great experience, thanks to all of you who took the time to read this blog and share in my trek to my first 5k. I’m starting round two tomorrow! 🙂
