Today was the first in the three series of races and the funny thing is I had totally forgot I about it until I got the reminder email this week! I knew the race was coming up but I thought it was later in the month 😝 but today was the day of the Run with the Dragons 5k
My running buddy Rich was out of town today for a family gathering; but one of the Genesis coaches and friend Barbara Jackson was there and I just have to say from the beginning this woman is just fabulous! I don’t think there could be a better cheerleader on the planet. She introduced me to other members of the Kanawha Running Club and throughout the race she cheered me on so I could meet my goal of new PR. She totally rocks and I can not thank her enough!
It was cloudy and overcast this morning not hot but the humidity was thick..blah. I wanted to set a new PR so my head was focused on that so I think I started out to fast; Barbara reminded me “easy start” but I focused on that freakin PR. So I during the race I had to adjust my pace because I started too fast and the humidity was also playing with me. Duh! Needless to say my HR got up a little too high, I upgraded to the Garmin Vivosmart HR+ and it kept alerting me my HR was too high. So I had to slow down and walk just a bit. But there was Barbara “you’re on target” “keep going” so I did. I kept going and before I knew it I was in the home stretch and Barbara was then yelling “dig deep, dig deep, you’re gonna do it” and I gave it all I had left and my legs were pounding but I did and I crossed the finish line!! My official time was 39:21:9! I had done it and set a new 5k PR! I was excited and honestly a little disappointed I wanted a lower time but I was grateful for the new PR. A year ago at my first race I finished at 48 minutes; so I’m good, I did it!
It was a good day, they had pizza for everyone after the race. Pizza at 9 am took some back to their college days! 🍕 Barbara placed her in class too (whoo!). Two more races in this series to go and the Charleston Distance 5k coming up too.
Happy running and remember…EASY START….Strong Finish… 😃
